"Church of Saint Sulpice", 18"x14" original acrylic painting on canvas board, 2008, private collection
This painting was begun in 2003 and was modeled after a photo I took while vacationing in the Bordeaux region of France. We had bicycled between bed & breakfasts through the countryside for a couple days and it was a pretty incredible experience! The colors of the real church of course didn't include blue, but I didn't want it to be too monotone. I had painted the sky blue and gray like it looked in the photo but didn't think the painting was "done." I looked at it for another 5 years, not touching it, but not thinking it was done either. Finally I decided to finish it and worked on the sky again, using different shades of blue. I still wasn't happy. Then I pulled out the pink and purple and said, yes!! That's what it needed!! What's funny is a lot of people think it looks Southwestern. I can definitely see that. Anyway, after battling it for 5 years, the sky is now my favorite part of the painting!
